Fishing & Outdoor Adventures
Wyoming 's North Platte River is one of the best trout
rivers in the United States , with an average of 5,000-plus
fish per fishable mile of water. These waters provide
a fly-fishing experience that is second to none. There
are many public access points to the river. The best
way to fish this river is by floating - most access
points have put-in/take-out capability. There is also
access at several parks within Casper .
Grey Reef Reservoir,
a camping area, launching site, and the river below
the dam have developed into a nationally known trout
fishery, 23 miles southwest of Casper off U.S. Hwy
220. Grey Reef is the second tailwater on the system
after the Miracle Mile and offers miles of excellent
fly fishing all the way to Casper.
| Alcova Reservoir ,
thirty miles south of Casper on the North Platte
offers a variety of water recreational activities
including waterskiing, jet skiing, and sail boating,
as well as excellent fishing possibilities for
the rainbow, and brown trout that are stocked
annually. Facilities include 6 campgrounds, 8
boat ramps, and marina concession. A barrier-free
fishing pier, restroom and shelter are located
at Black Beach . A dinosaur interpretive trail
is located near the Cottonwood Creek campground. |

Pathfinder
Reservoir is
the oldest on the North
Platte system, originally
constructed in 1909.
The dam is in a granite
canyon on the North
Platte . There are
3 boat ramps, 3 campgrounds,
shelters, a marina,
a museum, and hiking
trail. Rainbow and
cutthroat trout are
stocked annually and
other available species
include brown trout,
and walleye. The recreation
area and Pathfinder
National Wildlife Refuge
are located 43 miles
southwest of Casper
off U.S. Hwy 220. The
refuge is an important
waterfowl unit on the
western edge of the
central flyway. |
| The world famous Miracle
Mile , located between Seminoe and
Pathfinder reservoirs needs no introduction.
This area is a truly a magnificent fishery
that offers the angler great opportunity for
very large trophy trout. This section of river
is fishable throughout the year with certain
months offering more opportunity than others.
Although The Mile is floatable, it is much
more effective to wade fish and allows anglers
to cover more water. Although nymphs and indicators
are the norm, there is often great dry fly
fishing of which many fishermen do not take
advantage. |
