Renowned course designer Robert Trent Jones Jr. was given the task of turning the reclamation site of a former oil refinery that once was the largest producer of gasoline in the world into a world-class golf course. The result is the inspired Three Crowns Golf Club, which opened in May of 2005 and instantly became recognized as the best public course in Wyoming.

The course is enjoyable to golfers of all skill levels where scratch golfers find all kinds of exciting challenges, and a wide variety of tee and pin placements make it very accommodating to the beginner. Water comes into play on fourteen of the eighteen holes and the well-known Wyoming Wind will be a deciding factor on most rounds. Many holes play either against the wind or with a strong tailwind, which makes club selection challenging. Off the tee the golfers encounter generous fairways and large greens that will accept most shots.

Playing 7,065 yards from the tips, this par 72 course has 110 acres of playable turf and about 45 acres of native areas. A-1 bentgrass is used on the well-contoured PGA-regulation putting surfaces, and Kentucky bluegrass is used on the tees, fairways and rough. There are 86 bunkers that contain eye-catching white sand imported from Idaho. There are eight bodies of water of various sizes scattered throughout the golf course. Four of the lakes are for irrigation and aesthetic purposes and the other four are used in the remediation side of the project.

Along with the golf course, there is a 13-acre practice facility comprising of a driving range, practice putting green and a chipping area. There is also a covered practice facility that can be used during inclement weather. Three Crowns Golf Club also has a full-service pro shop featuring an extensive assortment of golf wear and equipment and the Filling Station Grill offers fine dining with a fantastic panoramic view of the 9th and 18th holes.

Three Crowns Golf Club"Our recent experience in Casper on the Three Crowns project represents perhaps the most restored 'brown site' to green golf course in the United States. The former Amoco refinery site was restored with meticulous attention to environmental and strategic golf concerns. The intricate irrigation and drainage engineering of this project has received several national awards. The ground water is not simply monitored but recycled through a bio-remediation process that includes a series of created wetlands that are strategically utilized on the golf course and function as filters for the irrigation and storm water. RTJII is proud to have been involved in the Three Crowns project and we congratulate BP and all the people who made Three Crowns a reality."
